Unexpected Health Benefits Of A Coffee Date

If you are single and on any of the dating sites, you are probably familiar with the “coffee date.” They are convenient and efficient, and if you don’t hit it off, you can move on without seeming rude. If there are sparks, you can move onto lunch, happy hour or even dinner. I am a coffee lover. I love the smell, the taste and even the idea of drinking coffee. I am a writer after all, and in my mind it is so, oh, I don’t know… writerly… is that a word… ?? to come up with brilliant prose with steaming mug of rich, dark java in hand. Luckily, there just seem to be more and more benefits to drinking the stuff.

I was out with a dear friend the other night and he showed me a spot about the size of a nickel on the back of his shoulder. He told me that he has had it for about six months and it just won’t go away. So he went to the doctor and was told that it is skin cancer. Luckily it can be removed and has not spread, but it was upsetting. I read an article today that said researchers not only found a link between increased coffee consumption and decreased skin cancer risk — for example, women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day had a lower risk of skin cancer than people who drank less than a cup of coffee a month — but also a link between overall increased caffeine consumption (like from coffee, soda, chocolate and tea) and decreased skin cancer risk. Meanwhile, there was no link between decaffeinated coffee consumption and risk of the skin cancer.

Well, whoo hoo for that! I likey likey! I will not feel guilty any longer when I pour that second cup.

Here are 5 benefits of drinking coffee:

1. Coffee protects the brain against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Caffeine is a cognitive stimulant that actually boosts brain functioning. Moderate to heavy coffee drinkers reduce their risks of developing dementia by about 65 percent!

2. Coffee reduces the risk of some cancers. Drinking coffee regularly actually reduces your risk of getting colon cancer by about a quarter. It also makes you less likely to develop liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.

3. Improves memory. New research shows that caffeine in coffee has a positive effect on memory and thought processes.

4. Reduces risk of disease. The antioxidants in coffee have been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and gallstones. Coffee may even help relieve asthma and prevent cavities.

5. Increases Alertness. Caffeine is known to increase alertness in individuals. This is because it stimulates the nervous system and regulates blood pressure and intestinal functions in the body.

So, set up a coffee date now and enjoy the health benefits and maybe even a love connection!
