How to Catch Your Date’s Attention

The depiction of Hollywood couples dating is usually portrayed as being pretty fantastic. And while the world of dating can very much be exciting, it can start off — and even continue to be — terrifying at the same time. Still, having the opportunity to meet new people, try new things and make new connections you wouldn’t otherwise is an experience certainly not worth passing up. But with so many potential Casanovas vying for your attention, how can you stand out from the crowd?

Put Yourself Out There

You certainly can’t grab anyone’s attention if you tend to sit around at home or alone in the corner of a bar. Yes, the dating world is risky, but you have to actually be willing to take that risk. Furthermore, you need to frequent places where other single people tend to mingle and try to grab each other’s attention.

Don’t be afraid to talk to strangers; in fact, you should embrace the opportunity to go on blind dates or to join a dating site. Don’t worry if you’re more of an introvert. Shy, quiet and people who tend to get nervous in social situations can join an activity-based group. For example, join a trivia team at a local bar or a bowling league and then practice your small talk.

Have Something Interesting to Say

Once you or your potential new partner have piqued each other’s interests, you need to do all you can to keep their attention and have them continue to call you. This doesn’t mean you need to resort to using an overplayed line or a crazy anecdote, but you do need to show who are as a person.

For example, instead of droning on about the ins and outs of your job, tell your date why you got into that line of work and what you love about it. Pick something you’re passionate about and tell your date how it has molded you as a person.

Don’t forget being a good date also means listening! You want to engage your partner in interesting conversation in which you both can participate. Ask him or her questions, and listen carefully to the answers. The more you show an interest in what your date has to say, the easier the conversation will flow and the more you’ll get to know each other.

Plan Unique Dates

One of the best ways to capture someone’s attention is with a unique date idea. This is a great time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. The activity should be tailored to something that shows off your personality or interests as well as something you in which you know your date will be interested. For example, if you’re an adrenaline junkie, plan a date to go bungee jumping or whitewater rafting. Or, if you’re both nature lovers, go for a long hike and enjoy a picnic.

Because you’re going out of the box, make sure you think through all the details to make it a success. If you decide to go bungee jumping, schedule an appointment with a trustworthy company ahead of time. Tell your partner how to dress for the excursion, and make sure they’re prepared. If you go for a long hike, be sure your car can make it over the rough roads to the trail head by checking your tires and battery. Be sure to also pack plenty of water and food to avoid any problems, too.

Of course, you don’t have to do anything crazy or not be yourself to catch your date’s attention. You simply need to find ways to show off the best and most interesting parts of what makes you one of a kind. Find unique ways to meet people, start up conversations and then plan your first date, and you’ll be sure to have their attention for the following dates to come.
