Finding a new style is tricky. You still want to look like yourself, but a more sophisticated and fashionable version. The trick to finding a happy medium between urban and uptown is to build a cohesive outfit that mixes both genres. You need to know how to dress for the occasion, whether it’s a work meeting, brunch or a night out, but you also owe it to yourself to develop your signature style for all of these events.
One of the best ways to develop your signature style is to stop buying out the entire section of Forever 21 and start investing in statement pieces that will last for more than one season. These pieces serve as your staples and help your cheaper, trendier pieces looking like a million bucks.
Find a Balance Between Business and Casual
If you tend to go too casual on the weekends (like yoga pants and a baggy T-shirt for your errands, movie date and girls night out), you need to kick things up a notch. If you counter this by being overly formal at work (another pencil skirt and button down shirt?), you may feel stifled in your fashion choices.
Finding a balance is essential for creating your signature style. Mix and match some of your casual and formal clothes to make fun, fashion-forward outfits. Go for pizza-printed Vans during the weekend and suede fringed high tops for the office. Both choices are trendy and appropriate for the situation. Another example is to pair one of your infamous pencil skirts with a trippy sequined crop top on Saturday night and a graphic tee and grandpa cardigan for the office on Monday. Don’t be afraid to try some new combinations to get the balance you’re yearning for in your wardrobe.
Try on New Styles
There is no substitute for trying on clothing. When shopping for new clothes, give yourself time, do some situps the day before (it makes everyone feel better about trying on clothes) and mentally prepare yourself for the task that lies ahead. Start by putting together three cute outfits you’ve never worn before. Three outfits may seem like a lot, but it will free you from obsessing over one specific outfit or that one item of clothing you’ve been dying to wear.
You’re probably not going to like 90 percent of what you try on, so accept that from the get go and keep pushing through any hesitation, roadblocks and frustration. Once you find a few staples and items to match with them to make your three outfits, don’t forget to take pics! This way you can refer back to them on those fateful days when it feels like you have nothing to wear.
Be True to Yourself
While it’s great to step out of your comfort zone every once in awhile and try something new, you need to be comfortable in your clothes. The whole point of finding your style is to express yourself and your personality. Whether you love wearing heels with every outfit or like bold, bright colors, stick with those themes as you upgrade your wardrobe. Wear a pair of classic, black heels with jeans for a casual day and buy a hot pink pair for your girls night out if that’s your thing. If you can’t tear yourself away from your favorite pair of blue jeans, pair them with a nice blouse and flats for work and a T-shirt in a flattering color for Sunday brunch. You don’t have to become a new person to upgrade your look, just enhance it to show off the cool person you already are.
